Early fall colors
October 22, 2009 by Aamer Javed

We are in the middle of the Fall season at the moment and apart from seeing colors everywhere, it can only mean one thing.

Endless opportunities to capture those colors.

I have had an opportunity to visit some Illinois state parks in the past 2 weeks. The pictures below were taken at three diffeent state parks – Starved rock, Rock cut & Morraine Hills.

How to Geotag pictures and put them on a map
October 11, 2009 by Aamer Javed

I have been searching for a reliable Geotagging and mapping program for a while now and I think I may have found what I was looking for. BUT. It definitely needs improvements and some bug fixes, even though it meets my basic needs. And I will put it to test before committing to it.

I have used many programs to Geotag pictures but none of them have fulfilled my purpose – to map geotagged pictures along with their gps tracks – until now.
As mentioned earlier, I have used several programs including, GeoSetter, GpicSync, locr, umapper, RoboGEO and Google Earth. All of these helped me embed GPS logs in the pictures, but didn’t allow me to conveniently put them on a map. If you use Adobe Lightroom, you can use this excellent plugin to geotag even your RAW picture files within Lightroom.

The service that has met my needs so far is www.everytrail.com. This website allows me to upload GPS coordinates of my trips, upload the geotagged pictures (or link them through flickr or picasa) and voila.

The following is output of a recent hiking trip.

You can even view my trip stats – altitude, speed, duration, length (click on stats)

There are some improvements that I would like to see with this service, for which I wouldn’t mind paying a fee. I will discuss those improvements as well as the process of geotagging pictures, in a later post.

Stay tuned.
