um yeah, JP Morgan Chase can close your account without your permission
August 26, 2008 – 11:32 amI have never heard of this nor do I think that it would or should have happened.
I had a checking account with Chase (formerly Bank One) in which I used to get direct deposits from my previous employer for expense reimbursements. Since I was no longer with the employer, I planned to close the account but was waiting for one last reimbursement on August 22, 2008.
Yesterday, I logged on to my account to see my balance and voila!! no account.
So I called the bank customer service and was informed that my account was closed for inactivity.
MY ACCOUNT WAS CLOSED FOR 30-40 DAYS OF ACTIVITY WITHOUT MY PERMISSION AND WORSE WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE. aweSOMe.
The lady told me that if I go to a branch that same day and have it reopened, my direct deposit will not be returned.
So last night, I went to a Chase location at 1900 S Cumberland, Park Ridge IL 60068. The gentleman was a little busy with his sleeves rolled up. I told him the situation and he said that the account cannot be reopened because it has been wiped off the system, contradicting with what I was told over the phone. But he would be willing to open a new account for me (so he can get his new account bonus). The new account would serve no purpose for me in getting the direct deposit back in my account. So I said no Thank you.
Three questions:
- How in the world a bank would close my account without my permission?
- Fine, I did not have any activity in the account for approximately 40 days. FORTY DAYS? I know circumstances where people have not had activity for years..
- Ok fine, it is their policy to close accounts with no activity/balance, than why have this no minimum balance requirement ‘feature’?
- Ok Ok, the bank can close it, but how are they going to know that I will not be using the account the day after they close it, IF THEY DON’T INFORM ME DOING SO BEFORE THEY CLOSE IT. Which is exactly what happened in this case.
I am ammaazzed at how they can do so without informing me.
